Wales wing Shane Williams and back James Hook are major doubts for next week’s final Pool D match against Fiji.
Both players miss Monday’s game against group minnows Namibia but their absence against Fiji would be a major blow as Wales seek to reach the quarter-finals.
Wales record try scorer Williams is suffering with a thigh strain, while full-back or fly-half Hook damaged his shoulder against Samoa.
“We’ve had Shane scanned and he has a strain,” said coach Warren Gatland.
“We think he may have done it against South Africa. We thought it was a haematoma, which is a knock, and he’s played against Samoa.”
Williams scored the winning try against Samoa, taking his Wales tally to 55, proving the 34-year-old Osprey remains his country’s most potent scoring threat.

The fear is that both Williams and Hook are also in danger of missing Wales’ possible quarter-final clash against Ireland on 8 October, should they beat Fiji.

However, there is better news over flanker Dan Lydiate’s ankle injury, while hooker Huw Bennett’s knock is also nto thought to be serious.

“In terms of Dan Lydiate, he’s recovering really well at the moment. He’s up back on his feet, doing a bit of jogging around so hopefully he’s not too far away,” Gatland said.

“Huw Bennett took a bit of a knock on his hip last week, hopefully he’ll be back training next week.”

Hook started Wales’ first two matches at full-back despite his preferred position being fly-half, but youngster Rhys Priestland has impressed in the pivotal stand-off role.

Priestland’s Scarlets team-mate Stephen Jones has been handed the 10 jersey against Namibia after recovering from a long-term calf problem.

Leigh Halfpenny impressed at full-back after replacing Hook against Samoa but the Cardiff Blue has been picked in his more usual wing position against Namibia, allowing specialist full-back Lee Byrne to take the 15 shirt after overcoming his own injury problems.

Gatland is happy with his fly-half options at the moment but is keen to see the wing candidates impress in case Williams’ injury proves serious.

“It’s a position [fly-half] there’s a bit of depth at the moment,” Gatland said

“We feel that there’s the experience of Stephen, we’ve seen the good job that Rhys Priestland has done and hopefully in a couple of weeks if James recovers from injury he might be in contention for hopefully the quarter-finals… as well.

“With Shane potentially being injured for next week, we need to look at the wing combinations. Shane might be a couple of weeks.”

Gatland has made 11 changes to the starting line-up against Namibia at Stadium Taranaki.

Only centre Jonathan Davies, lock Alun Wyn Jones, skipper Sam Warburton and number eight Toby Faletau remain from the side that defeated Samoa last weekend.

There is a first Wales start since last November for Blues prop Gethin Jenkins, who returned to action as a replacement last week, with full-back Byrne among nine players making full World Cup debuts.

Uncapped Scarlets hooker Ken Owens is among the replacements, who include Blues scrum-half Lloyd Williams – the son of former Wales number nine Brynmor Williams.
